Simple Comforts
December 2012
Mixed Media including Over 20
Collected While Travelling and
Homemade Encaustic (Wax)
Paint on Canvas
8" x 8”/each
This two piece series was inspired by the cover art on JRR Tolkien’s novels “The Silmarillion” and “Unfinished Tales”. Throughout my life I have found comfort in JRR Tolkien’s writing and I wanted to portray this comfort in an abstract way. Starting with a rough sketch of the cover art symbols, I then allowed my creativity to run free while keeping the Hobbit lifestyle and sensibility in mind. For me, true comfort is found in the life of a Hobbit. I honestly believe that good food, drink, friends, a pipe full of long bottom leaf, and love is all that is needed for a happy life. These simple comforts should be cherished and we sometimes forget this in our modern busy world. Using more than 20 traditional mediums, many gathered from my travels around the world, my homemade encaustic (wax) paint, and antique buttons, I hope to spread the calm that comes with a life filled with simple comforts.

Marilyn In Abstract
December 2012
Acrylic Paint and Homemade
Encaustic (Wax) Paint on Canvas
12"x12"
This piece entitled “Marilyn In Abstract” began with a small simple abstract painting. When I had completed the abstract coloured squares I felt the piece did not exude my usual style. I generally portray the beauty that can be found in our world and with this in mind I quickly decided to incorporate one of the most beautiful women in history, Marilyn Monroe. Using my high quality homemade wax paint, also known as encaustic paint, I began to add a textured layer that would portray the luxurious Marilyn. It is truly a lovely piece that brings together modern abstract, vintage beauty, and natural mediums.

Modern Warrior Beauty
November 2012
Oil Paint on Bamboo Board
6.7” x 12.7”
“Modern Warrior Beauty” was inspired by the fierceness found in all women. Some women feel the warrior inside of them and choose to depict this part of their personality on their skin. Tattoo culture is something that has always fascinated me as I too have tattoos. I truly believe that tattoos can be a way of expressing your inner soul and that is what I tried to portray in this stunning bamboo painting.
My personal inner warrior woman was fostered throughout my childhood and teen life as I was a huge fan (and still am) of Xena Warrior Princess. Aspects of this can be seen in the painting as the tattoo depicts a breast plate and breast dagger similar to that of Xena. Also, her unique earring/ear plug is designed liked Xena’s legendary chakram.

Lalique's Dragonfly
October 2012
Oil Paint on Bamboo Board
6.7” x 12.7”
This artwork was specially made for my sister's birthday present. I chose to do my own representation of Rene Lalique's "Femme-libellule" (Dragonfly Woman) because Meagan and I had the pleasure of seeing the corsage ornament in real life at the Museu Calouste Gulbenkianin Lisbon, Portugal. It was also an obvious choice because Meagan has a fondness for dragonflies and even has a tattoo of one on her calf. I hope she enjoys her present and I hope you enjoy it too!

Seven Beauties
October 2012
Acrylic Paint on Canvas
18"x18"
I absolutely love my new piece "Seven Beauties" which is made up of a pattern that contains seven beautiful women intricately woven together. My inspiration for this piece began when my sister gave me a book about the artist M.C. Escher. He was famous for his intricate pattern work and prints. I was completely blown away as I looked through the book and knew that I would be inspired by his style in multiple artworks to come. This piece in particular is inspired by M.C. Escher's piece "Eight Heads". I hope you love "Seven Beauties" as much as I do and feel inspired to share it with your friends.

Courtship Of The Waved Albatross
October 2012
Mixed Media including
Watercolour Paint,
Acrylic Paint, and
Oil Paint on Canvas
12” x 12”
This mixed media art series was created as a gift for my amazing mother, Jennifer Prud'homme. I used my own photography of the adorable waved albatross' that I had taken while volunteering in Ecuador in 2008. Ecuador, like the waved albatross, is absolutely stunning and the culture is very warm and inviting. I was sad to leave but excited to share my photos with my nature loving parents. The adorable albatross couple doing their mating dance and kissing was one of the most memorable moments of the trip. I hope my loving mother feels a sense of peace and warmth when looking at these beautiful birds and I hope you do too.

Beautiful Ambiguity
October 2012
Acrylic Paint on Canvas
18” x 24”
This original artwork by Mixed Media Artist Malinda Prud'homme reflects her thoughts on culture, discrimination, and beauty. Many different races were used as references in order to create this stunning painting of a gorgeous woman. The beauty of this multicultural woman represents the beauty found in each culture. More importantly, it represents the beauty that can be created when cultures come together, not only to have children but, to grow and learn from each other. The loosely painted and multicoloured skin speaks volumes about the importance of skin colour and that it is in fact not important at all. The colour seen behind the wisps of her hair as well as the iridescence of her eyes (better seen in person) represent her essence. Thus, her beauty is not derived from the colour of her skin, eyes, or lips … it is found within her multifaceted spirit.

A Patch On My Soul
September 2012
Mixed Media with
Watercolour Pencils,
Watercolour Pastels,
Oil Paint, and
Coloured Pencils
on Canvas
24” x 48”
This mixed media artwork represents the intense impact each visited country has on my soul. As a passionate world traveller I seek not only the sights and sounds of a new location but the impact the culture and people will have on who I am as a person. Every country, even city/town, is unique and therefore teaches me something new about myself or affects me in a different way. There is truly no experience more exhilarating.
The backgrounds of this original artwork is abstracted and was created using watercolour pencils, watercolour pastels, and watercolour paint. It represents the wild and changing spirit of the traveller. The travel patches, which were applied using thin washes of oil paint and coloured pencils represent the locations that are making their permanent imprint on the traveller's soul.

Summer In Rome
August 2012
Watercolour Paint and Oil Paint on Canvas
12" x 16"/each
This two piece series is inspired by two fashion advertisements I fell in love with while travelling in Rome. I was completely blown away by this lovely use of traditional art in modern day advertising. It seems that this could only be possible in Italy. Both images are alluring, light, and absolutely gorgeous.

Restless In Wonderment
June 2012
Acrylic Paint, Oil Paint, and Glitter On Bamboo Boards
6.7” x 12.7"/each
It has been quite some time since I have had a normal night’s sleep. It seems that my mind is constantly thinking of wonderful ideas and images for new art pieces. Throughout the day I often "zone out" and then quickly write notes and sketches in my sketch book. It is an exhilarating experience. Yet even after a long day, and some time well spent reading a book, I close my eyes and see colours and images come together.
This series is a reflection of the past few months in which I have spent long days and restless nights in wonderment of all the beautiful creations my mind concocts. Sleepless nights are frustrating but the beauty my mind attracts makes me feel alive and reminds me that I am so lucky to be able to constantly consider my art as opposed to the stresses other people often ponder. It is a sign that I am living a truly peaceful life.

Stonehenge
"Seeing Into The Soul"
'Secretive'
July 2012
Acrylic Paint and Oil Paint on Wood
These four paintings depict the beautiful and mystical Stonehenge. I used my very own photos from my visit to Stonehenge. The experience, which took place during my huge 2010 Europe trip, was one I will never forget. Needless to say, it was lovely to paint these images of Stonehenge and be able to mentally travel back to the amazing site once again.

Living Magic
March 23, 2012
Coloured Pencils from the Museu
Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon, Portugal; on Paper
5” x 5”/each
This fun little series was inspired by my latest travel experience; going to Portugal with my sister Meagan. In mid-December we spent 9 days in Lisbon enjoying the sights and meeting great people as well as exploring the outlying cities and towns. The very first sight we went to see on our first day in Lisbon was the Museu Calouste Gulbenkian. When we visited the gift shop, I was lucky enough to snag the very last set of Calouste Gulbenkian coloured pencils! Now if you are already familiar with my work then you probably know that I love to collect art supplies from all of the places I travel to. I love that I can use these collected media and make pieces that, not only portray my artistic expression, but will also remind me and other viewers of the places the media come from. Thus, I was extremely excited to give these coloured pencils a shot!
Right before leaving for our trip, I introduced my sister Meagan to a new show I had just discovered and loved, Merlin. As we are alike in many ways, she liked it too. She was able to download it on her iPad and we ended up watching on flights and long bus rides during our trip. So this series is extremely inspired by Portugal and my memories of my time there.

Prestigious Professions Of The Past
March 17, 2012
Mixed Media with Watercolour Paint, Oil Paint, and Graphite Pencil
8” x 10” each
This series strives to depict the struggles that creative professionals are currently suffering from. It also personally depicts the four creative professions I am very passionate about but am finding it impossible to find work in. Each of the four professions currently has workers who are struggling to find quality work. To read about each profession and/or each work of art please continue.

Artists Insignificance
March 17, 2012
Mixed Media with Watercolour Paint, Oil Paint, and Graphite Pencil
8” x 10”
The first piece in this series represents the struggles that visual artists are currently struggling through; especially artists who work solely with their hands and do not employ electronic “help”. Throughout history, particularly during the Renaissance, artists held prestigious positions in society and were honoured for their skill and talent. A very good artist could gain employment with various wealthy families, cities, religions, and so on. In fact, many wealthy families would spend their entire wealth on grand paintings or sculptures. However, in our current society visual art seems to hold little or no importance. Those artists, such as myself, who work solely with their hands and create classic pieces of art have a very small niche with regards to employment. Therefore, sadly, many artists are forced to take on another profession (if they find one) and their artistic passion and talent usually takes the back burner.

Teachers in Abundance
March 17, 2012
Mixed Media with Watercolour Paint, Oil Paint, and Graphite Pencil
8” x 10”
The second piece in this series represents the struggles that new teachers are currently suffering from. As an extremely qualified and passionate teacher who is finding it impossible to find quality teaching work, I feel very close to this issue. Throughout history, particularly during ancient history, teachers were regarded as extremely intelligent professionals that were very highly regarded in society. Unfortunately this no longer seems to be the case. At this point in time there is a serious over abundance of teachers, specifically in Ontario. Because of this it is impossible for new teachers to find a teaching position in a quality school. Furthermore, because of the quantity of teachers who are applying to the few positions that do arise, those teachers who have a passion for teaching and did not “go into teaching for the summer vacation”, are falling through the cracks. The state of this professional is proving that even with a university degree and specialized education teachers are finding themselves unemployed and struggling to survive.

Writers Depreciation
March 17, 2012
Mixed Media with Watercolour Paint, Oil Paint, and Graphite Pencil
8” x 10”
The fourth piece in this series represents the current decrease in the book industry. Books used to be renowned, interesting, and most importantly, integral to society and passing on information. Now with the internet and having information so easily accessible, books and professional writing are losing their relevance in today’s society. I have recently delved into the writing industry and have definitely gained an understanding of writer’s struggles. There is such a lack of writing professions that deal with creative genres and those that do exist are few and far between. Even the thought of reading books electronically saddens me (though I do realize this is beneficial to the environment) as there is something solid and comforting about holding a book. The cover art, turning the pages, and of course, the essential book smell is something I personally cannot imaging loosing in my life.

Travelers Irrelevance
March 17, 2012
Mixed Media with Watercolour Paint, Oil Paint, and Graphite Pencil
8” x 10"
The third piece in this series represents the lack of travelling professions or even the ability to travel while maintaining a profession. Once again, throughout history travelling to new nations was a celebrated profession as explorers would return with new relationships, experiences, and knowledge. They would apply all that they gained in order to better their own nation and the people living within it. Our current society seems to feel that they know what is necessary of other nations and refuse to admit that their own nation could and should be altered. This arrogance is a major fault in our world today. Travelling the world should be something that is promoted and held in high regard. I definitely feel that there should be more professions that include world travel. At the very least, current professions should make is easier for their employees to travel in order to gain world experience. At this point in time, if a worker is lucky enough to gain full time work, they are given very little time off and are therefore limited to exploring only the world around their work. Sadly those of us who have a strong passion for travelling find it almost impossible to make a living doing so or find it difficult to travel while making a living.
